Constant innovation in technology makes our lives a lot of easier. It allows us to do things more efficiently and fastest than ever before. Then there’s Monday morning. What happens? People come to work and shuffle paper, see prospects, perhaps they make a sale, deal with customer complaints, speak to suppliers, arrange meetings, hold meetings, read e-mail, mail, send mail, e-mail. Are they challenged? Do they really want to be there? What would they be doing if they weren’t there?
Adapt your presentation to suit the need. Everyone learns in a different manner: some people love numbers and statistics, while others absorb information through anecdotal stories. Others like both ways of learning. Whatever you do, be sensitive to your audience and adapt your presentation to suit.
Having that new equipment in house now also means you can start learning to use it. Train your operators to run the new equipment now, while you have the extra time. Learn how to program the machines and start determining which jobs might run quicker, more reliably, or more accurately. Train your maintenance personnel and set up your maintenance schedules. Start saving now and position yourself to handle those new jobs when you get them.
Increase selling time. The only time that is real “value added” is the time spent with the prospect or customer. The time getting an appointment, traveling to and from locations, completing paper work, and attending meetings is an incidental necessity, but not value added. Do all of these tasks outside of the high value added hours. Increasing value added selling time can be learned using materiales lean and six sigma principles.
Everybody, everywhere is hurting. What businesses are left will have to be serious about looking at the heart and soul of their company. What are you going to do as a Business Owner to ensure that you can weather this situation?
To me this is the easiest of the 4 steps, but a lot of folks struggle. They expect everyone to be experts on day one. In true lean fashion you should strive for perfection, but this is no time to send people to the wood shed for messing up. This is where the rubber meets the road for the leadership team. It’s time for you to do your job. Teach, coach, mentor, etc. you want to use this time to build the capability of your people so they can execute the system flawlessly. Reward proper behavior, address the things that are going wrong, but don’t beat people up over it. If you do it right, you’ll come in one day and realize that suddenly everything just works… And it’s at that point that you’ve changed the culture.
